Some questions need a pattern, not just conversations.

A call can go deep with a single expert. It cannot tell you whether that read holds across buyers, operators, or markets. A survey is how you field the same brief at scale and get something you can put next to a model. Pricing. Adoption. Channel sentiment. Competitive response.

A PI Survey puts true experts into the sample. PI Experts™ who actually know, custom-sourced, highly-vetted, and precision-matched to your exact questions. Sector-wide input. Ready to produce decision-ready signal.

Primary Insight sources the respondents, qualifies them before they enter the field, and matches the sample to what you need to find out. If you need true experts at scale, you are in the right place.

When a PI Survey is the right move.

Use a survey when one conversation cannot map the field.

  • See pricing, adoption, or competitive response across a sector

  • Separate signal from one strong anecdote

  • Test whether a mechanism holds beyond a single market

  • Put structured input next to the model

A PI Survey is the format when depth has to become a pattern.

Why a PI Survey is different.

Most surveys optimize for headcount. PI Surveys optimize for the sample.

  • Custom-sourced respondents who belong in the field, not whoever is available

  • Highly-vetted before they enter the sample

  • Precision-matched to your exact questions, not a generic industry template

The format is scale. The product is the sample.

How a PI Survey runs.

The questionnaire is simple. The sample is not.

  1. You brief the exact questions and the population that should answer them. Primary Insight sources people who belong in that field.

  2. Every respondent is qualified before they enter the sample.

  3. The survey is fielded. After delivery, we check whether the questions were actually answered.

If they were not, the work does not close.

PI Events vs. other solutions.

A call is the default. Use a survey when one conversation cannot map the sector.

  • Use a PI Call when one currently active expert can produce a decision-ready answer.

  • Use a PI Meeting when the nuance will not surface on the phone.

  • Use a PI Event when you need targeted people around one question in the same room.

  • Use a PI Survey when one conversation cannot map the sector.

FAQ

When should we use a survey instead of a call, meeting, or event?

Use a PI Survey when one conversation cannot map the field. You already know a single expert can go deep. You need the pattern across buyers, operators, or markets, from people who belong in the sample. A PI Call is the default when one currently active expert can produce a decision-ready answer. A PI Meeting is for nuance that will not surface on the phone. A PI Event is for targeted friction in a room. A survey is for scale with a standard still attached to it. Book the survey when you need to see pricing, adoption, channel sentiment, or competitive response across a sector. Book it when one strong anecdote is running the model and you need to know whether that anecdote is the market. Book it when a mechanism has to hold in more than one geography or customer set before you treat it as underwritten. Do not book a survey because a chart feels more defensible than a call. Headcount is easy to overvalue. Soft questions and soft respondents produce a clean-looking result you still cannot use. If one precision-matched expert can settle the question, use the call. If you need disagreement in the same room, use the event. If you need the floor, use the meeting.

Who answers a PI Survey?

PI Experts. Custom-sourced for the field. Highly-vetted before they enter the sample. Precision-matched to your exact questions. A lot of people carry the expert label and can talk about an industry or a company. Far fewer have the accurate, nuanced insight that drives better decisions when capital is on the line. Surveys hide that problem behind n. The file looks complete. The sample does not belong there. Primary Insight sources respondents against the population the brief requires, not against whoever will click through. About 70 percent of experts are sourced new for the specific request. Candidates are qualified before they count. Titles are not enough. A generalist who will finish a 15-minute form is not a respondent. A person who still buys, operates, or competes in the category is. That is the difference between a survey and a stack of opinions. The format is quantitative. The people still have to know the subject now.

How does a PI Survey actually run?

You brief the exact questions and the population that should answer them. Primary Insight sources people who belong in that field. Each respondent is qualified. The survey is fielded. After delivery, we check whether the questions were actually answered. That is the PI Standard applied at scale. Phase one is the work that decides whether the dataset is usable: defining the sample, custom sourcing, qualifying, and making sure the questions force a real distinction instead of a soft average. Phase two is fielding. Phase three is the debrief. Did this produce decision-ready signal you can put next to the model? If it did not, the file does not close because a spreadsheet came back. Sometimes the sample missed a seat. Sometimes one question failed to separate the mechanism. Sometimes the result tells you which single expert you now need on a PI Call. The format can change. The brief stays the brief. Most surveys optimize for completion. PI Surveys optimize for the sample and the follow-through. The format is scale. The product is the answer.

What if the survey does not answer the question?

Then it is not done. A delivered dataset is not a completed question. A good survey can still leave a piece open. You may see pricing pressure across the sector and still need one procurement leader to explain the mechanism. You may see adoption splitting by segment and still need a meeting in the geography that is driving the split. After delivery, Primary Insight checks whether you have what you came for. If you do not, the work continues against the remaining question. That may mean tightening the sample and fielding again. It may mean converting the leftover issue to a PI Call, a PI Meeting, or a PI Event. The Answer Commitment applies here the same way it applies to every other format. This is how you keep surveys from becoming a larger pile of commentary. Do not add respondents to rescue a weak brief. Tighten the question. Source the people who belong in the field. Use the format that fits what is still open.

How do you handle compliance on surveys?

The same way it is handled on calls, meetings, and events: as an operating requirement. Respondents are qualified and briefed before they enter the sample. Confidential, proprietary, and inside information are not the point of the instrument and are not to be solicited. A PI Survey is for industry knowledge, operating reality, and current market mechanism, captured in a structured form. It is not a way to collect what your institution cannot ask in conversation. Primary Insight has operated to an institutional standard for 20+ years, with a record of institutional-grade compliance and zero infractions. Developed inside Bear Stearns in 2005, retained by JPMorgan, and still run for teams that cannot treat a questionnaire as an informal exception to the rules. The qualifying step is part of that control. The wrong respondent is both a research problem and a risk problem. If your legal or compliance team needs process language, documentation, or a clear description of how the sample is built and briefed, that is part of the engagement. A precise sample is easier to keep inside the lines than a wide panel. That is one more reason the sample is the product.

Do we need a large commitment to field a survey?

No. Start with the questions the brief requires. You do not need a research program, a minimum number of waves, or a bundled package to request a PI Survey. If one conversation cannot map the sector and the population can be defined, that is the brief. The same matching, qualifying, and compliance standards apply whether this is a single pulse or part of ongoing coverage. Teams over-buy surveys the same way they over-buy rooms and travel. They assume a serious process should come with a large n and a standing tracker. A large n with the wrong people produces averages. Use a survey when depth has to become a pattern. Use a call when one expert can settle it. Add the next wave only when the first result creates the next question. Primary Insight is a quality-focused expert network for institutional decision-makers. 800,000+ consultations. 2,700+ client organizations. Clients and experts active on six continents. The firm can support ongoing programs of calls, meetings, events, and surveys. It does not require a tracking contract to field one precise instrument. Bring the questions one conversation cannot answer. Request the trial. See whether the sample produces decision-ready signal or just a finished dataset.
