FAQ

What makes Primary Insight different from other expert networks?

Most expert networks treat the call itself as the product. A name is pulled from a database, a conversation is scheduled, and the engagement ends when the hour is up. Primary Insight was built around a different premise: the deliverable is the answer, not the calendar invite. We source experts fresh for every specific request rather than relying on a static pool of names. Candidates go through a qualifying interview so we can confirm they are currently active in the industry, close to the issues that matter, and capable of speaking with precision. Knowledge is verified, not assumed. Once the engagement begins, it continues until the question is resolved. If the first conversation surfaces new angles or incomplete answers, we keep working. That might mean a follow-up call, a different expert, or additional context. The PI Standard governs the entire process from intake through resolution. Compliance is treated as a core operating requirement rather than a checkbox. Primary Insight has operated to institutional standards for more than twenty years, with a flawless compliance record and zero infractions. Clients do not have to trade quality or speed for peace of mind. Finally, we do not require large minimum commitments to begin working together. Teams can engage on a project basis, which removes a common barrier for research groups that need high-quality input without locking into oversized retainers. The result is a different experience: experts who are current, a process that prioritizes the answer, and an operating standard that institutional teams can rely on.

How do you source and vet your experts?

Expert quality begins with sourcing. Instead of matching a request against a pre-existing database of profiles, we identify and approach candidates specifically for the question at hand. This approach prioritizes relevance over convenience. Once potential experts are identified, they complete a qualifying interview. The purpose is straightforward: confirm that the individual is currently active in the relevant part of the industry, possesses firsthand knowledge of the issues being researched, and can communicate that knowledge clearly. We are looking for people who are still inside the market, not those relying on experience from several years earlier. The qualifying step also allows us to assess fit for the specific engagement. Two people with similar titles can have very different exposure to the dynamics that matter for a given diligence question. The interview helps surface those differences before any client conversation takes place. This process is more time-intensive than simply searching a database, but it produces a higher rate of useful conversations. Clients spend less time filtering out outdated or tangential perspectives and more time extracting decision-critical information. Every expert who participates in a Primary Insight engagement has cleared this standard. There is no secondary tier of less-vetted participants.

Are your experts currently active in the industry?

Yes. We deliberately prioritize experts who remain active inside their industries today. Many traditional expert networks include a substantial number of former executives, consultants, and industry participants who left their operating roles years earlier. While some of those individuals retain useful perspective, the market moves quickly. Pricing dynamics, competitive behavior, customer preferences, and operational realities can shift in months rather than years. Recollections of how things used to work often lag current conditions. Primary Insight focuses on people who are still close to the work. That may include current operators, recent executives, suppliers, customers, or specialists who interact with the market on a regular basis. The goal is to provide insight grounded in present conditions rather than historical memory. This preference for active participants is one of the reasons every expert completes a qualifying interview. Titles and past roles are not enough. We need confirmation that the individual can speak knowledgeably about what is happening now. Clients consistently report that the difference is noticeable. Conversations feel more current, more specific, and more useful for decisions that have to be made in the present environment.

Do you require large minimum commitments?

No. Primary Insight does not require large minimum commitments to begin an engagement. Many expert networks structure their commercial relationships around sizable retainers or multi-project commitments. While that model can work for some organizations, it creates friction for teams that need high-quality research support on a more flexible basis. It also tends to push smaller or more focused projects outside the practical reach of the service. We designed our approach differently. Teams can engage project by project. There is no requirement to pre-commit to a large volume of work in order to access the network or the PI Standard. This allows investment professionals, corporate strategy groups, and advisory teams to use Primary Insight when the research need is clear and the stakes justify external insight, without carrying unused commitment. Flexibility does not mean lower standards. Every engagement, regardless of size, is still subject to the same sourcing, vetting, and compliance requirements. The absence of large minimums simply removes an unnecessary barrier to getting started. Clients appreciate the ability to scale usage according to actual research demand rather than contractual obligations.

How does compliance work at Primary Insight?

Compliance is treated as a foundational operating requirement rather than an add-on or a periodic review item. Primary Insight has maintained institutional-grade compliance standards for more than two decades. The firm was developed inside Bear Stearns in 2005, later retained by JPMorgan, and has operated continuously under rigorous compliance expectations since that time. The result is a flawless compliance record with zero infractions. In practical terms, this means clear protocols around expert selection, information boundaries, documentation, and client interaction. Experts are briefed on the rules that govern the conversation. Clients receive the transparency they need to satisfy internal compliance and legal requirements. There is no ambiguity about what can and cannot be discussed. We do not treat compliance as a marketing claim. It is embedded in how engagements are structured and how the firm has operated for over twenty years. Institutional clients, particularly those in regulated environments or with stringent internal policies, consistently cite this consistency as a primary reason they continue to work with Primary Insight. When research needs to move quickly, teams should not have to choose between speed and compliance integrity. Our process is designed so that both can be maintained at the same time.

What happens if an expert doesn’t fully answer my question?

The engagement does not end when the scheduled time is over if material questions remain unanswered. Primary Insight operates under the principle that the deliverable is the resolution of the research question, not the completion of a single call. If a conversation reveals that the expert’s perspective is only partial, that new angles have emerged, or that a different type of expertise is required, the process continues. That may involve a follow-up discussion with the same expert, the introduction of an additional expert with complementary knowledge, or further refinement of the research focus. The PI Standard is designed to keep the work moving until the client has the decision-critical information they came for. This approach stands in contrast to models where the call is treated as a discrete, self-contained unit. In those models, incomplete answers often become the client’s problem to solve. At Primary Insight, incomplete answers trigger continued effort under the same quality and compliance standards that governed the original engagement. Clients are not left to piece together partial insights on their own. The process is structured to pursue clarity rather than simply to fulfill a time commitment.
